A63 slip road in Hull city centre to be closed for 12 weeks

A busy exit road onto the A63 in the city centre is set to be closed to traffic for up to 12 weeks from the start of next month. The Commercial Road exit onto Castle Street serves both the Anchorage housing estate to the west of Hull Marina and the Kingston Retail Park. Read more:Warning of Humber Bridge travel disruption as staff forced to isolate However, the route currently allowing traffic to join the westbound cariageway of the A63 will be closed from Monday, August 2, as part of Highways England's ongoing £355m improvement scheme on Castle Street. The scheduled 12-week closure will allow contractors to start work building a section of a new underpass as part of the huge upgrade project at the Mytongate junction. A piling rig at the site of the new underpass section of the A63 in Castle Street (Image: Hull Live) In a letter to residents living nearby, Highwys England's A63 Castle Street project manager Fran Oliver says: “We are creating a new junction by lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction to create a split-level junction. “This will ease congestion as well as improving safety and access to the port. “We are closing the exit from Commercial Road onto the A63 westbound carriageway to allow us to build a section of the underpass. “This will involve the construction of the southern underpass wall panels where we will be using a variety of piling rigs to create large, deep excavations throughout the area during the day. “The road will be closed 24 hours, seven days a week, for around 12 weeks due to the depth of the excavations. “The closure will take place from outside the Whittington and Cat pub and will start on Monday, August 2. The Commercial Road exit onto the A63 in Castle Street “Drivers will be diverted along Kingston Street and English Street to Daltry Street where they will be able to re-join the A63.” One giant piling rig is already on the site ahead of the exit road closure. You can sign up very simply by following the instructions here The works will see the level of the existing A63 being lowered by around seven metres, stretching from Castle Buildings to the east and Spruce Road to the west. When completed, traffic on the main east-west A63 route will use the underpass while a new-look road link above it will connect the southern end of Ferensway with Commercial Road which will include a three-metre wide combined cycleway and footpath.
