Calls to “encourage and respect” Hull’s cyclists have sparked a heated debate among the city’s road users. The relationship between motorists and cyclists is often a bone of contention on Hull’s roads. Along with the introduction of new cycle lanes, some drivers feel that cyclists are obstructing the city’s roads and creating more traffic. Conversely, in a post on the Hull Traffic and Travel Facebook page, others are calling for more people to take up cycling in an effort to have fewer cars on the road. This drew some rather impassioned responses from other road users. Just a quick question regarding the ongoing battle between car drivers and cyclists… Surely drivers want to get where they are going with minimal fuss and disruption. “We all know that when there are fewer cars on the road, journey times are shorter… So more people on bikes would equal fewer cars… Fewer cars would equal smoother and quicker journeys… You should be encouraging and tolerating commuting by cycle as a way to improve your journey in a car, not the opposite. Some say cyclists deserve more respect “Hating on cyclists and making the roads dangerous for them only means that more of them will use their cars, congestion will increase and journeys will be more hassle.
