City centre streets will be remodelled to promote safe cycling
Traffic islands and footpath “build-outs” will be introduced in two city centre streets, as part of traffic calming and highway improvement works. The measures will be put in place in Baker Street, at the junction with Prospect Street, and on Wright Street at the junction with Percy Street. They will replace temporary road blocks, which have closed the streets to through traffic. The work is related to the Freetown Way overhaul, which will see the road return to two lanes of traffic. The project is designed to help encourage cyclists into the city centre by creating a safer off-road cycle route parallel to Freetown Way.
