Coroner’s concerns over busy Hull roundabout after tragic death of…

Concerns have been raised about “inappropriate signage” at a busy Hull roundabout following the tragic death of a cyclist, a coroner has said in a prevention of future deaths report. Gary Stephen Dunn, 47, was cycling to college on December 8, 2023, when he was struck by a van at the roundabout connecting Ferry Lane and Stoneferry Road. He died instantly and the road was shut by Humberside Police for eight hours. Tragically, Mr Dunn was positioned in the van's blind spot and the driver said he never saw him. Coroner Lorraine Harris said the layout of the roundabout had recently changed, so that both the first lane and second lane could be used to leave the roundabout at the first junction. But heavy traffic meant the road markings indicating the layout were not always visible. The coroner explained: “As the vehicles leave the give way line, the LGV is indicating to take the first junction. Mr Dunn was positioned very close to the cab. It would not be possible to say whether he noticed the indicator. “As both the LGV and Mr Dunn leave the roundabout, they are both positioned in lanes that allow exit via the first junction.
