Council to alter ‘complicated’ Ferensway bus lane junctions as visitor…

Alterations are set to be made to two 'complicated' Hull city centre junctions that have led to 'confused' drivers being stung by bus lane fines. Enforcement of the bus lane on Ferensway has led to numerous drivers receiving Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs), with the section of road between Lombard Street and Portland Place causing particular issues among some drivers. These include Mark Fleming who visited Hull for a wedding in June. Days later, he received a PCN through the post informing him he had driven in a bus lane on Ferensway. Mr Fleming had turned out of Lombard Street and driven just 70m on Ferensway before turning off into Portland Place. Mr Fleming claims he was unaware that the left-hand lane was in fact a bus lane. Upon receiving the PCN through the post he felt the bus lane was not indicated well enough by signage or road markings and it seemed unreasonable to expect drivers to, within the 70m between the junctions, enter the middle lane before exiting the road at Portland Place from that lane. As it stands, the bus lane begins immediately past Lombard Place and continues to the junction with Portland Place. Following a gap at the junction, it then continues again towards Pearson Street.
