Drivers in England have named their favourite roads – and seven of the top 10 are motorways

Drivers in England have been polled on their favourite stretches of road, and it seems the nation’s motorways have a place forever in our hearts. Seven of the top 10 answers are some of the UK’s busiest routes – or at least parts of them – with joint first place going to the M6 in Cumbria and the M1 in Leicestershire. The M5 near Taunton was third and even the M25 made the list for its stretch through Surrey, the results compiled by Highways England show. Other favourite routes for motorists included the A1 in Northumberland and the M62 near Chainbar.  The survey results come ahead of the late May bank holiday when Highways England lifts as many roadworks as possible at this popular time for travel. The company’s teams will be working around the clock to remove more than 700 miles of roadworks – meaning around 97 per cent of motorways and major A roads will be roadworks-free. Highways England’s customer service director, Melanie Clarke, said: “Many people have a favourite road they love driving on – and we want everyone to reach their destinations safely. “We’re doing everything we can to make journeys as smooth as possible for those travelling and that’s why we’re keeping around 97 per cent of
