Driving instructor fears Southcoates roundabout advice could ’cause accidents’

A driving instructor from Hull believes the official guidance about how to navigate the Southcoates roundabout could “cause accidents”. With a number of local motorists confused about how to approach the roundabout on Hedon Road, a driver wrote to National Highways to ask for some clarification. National Highways responded with a diagram showing how to approach the roundabout. The diagram explains that, when approaching from Hedon Road westbound, the lefthand lane is used for the first exit onto Hedon Road, the middle lane is used for Hedon Road and Old Hedon Road, while the righthand lane is used for Southcoates Lane only. But a driving instructor from Hull said the advice was incorrect and he believed it could lead to accidents. Read more: Motorists have no idea what this unusual street sign in Hull means Speaking to Hull Live, Michal Karwasinski said: “The problem is with the signs leading to the roundabout and the road markings, which don’t correspond with National Highways’ guidance. The old Hedon Road exit is a right turn, and therefore should be approached from the righthand lane. “This could potentially cause some accidents because, if you follow the signage, it is all very clear that right turns should be made from the righthand lane only. Approaching the old Hedon Road exit from the middle lane, as National Highways have advised, would mean a serious fault and an instant fail on your driving test and you’re not following the road markings or signage.” National Highways issued the following guidance Michal had his suspicions validated by the Driving Instructors Association after writing to them last week.
