Motorists say they are mixing E5 and E10 fuel in a bid to get 'better fuel economy' following reports that drivers are getting less mileage from the new E10. E10 fuel was introduced two months ago in a bid to help reduce carbon emissions as it is made from more recyclable ethanol. For more news click here. The standard petrol grade in the UK changed from E5 to E10 in September – meaning regular unleaded contains up to 10 per cent bio-ethanol, instead of the current five per cent. But some drivers claim their fuel economy has been worse since the introduction despite the Government claiming there is less than one per cent difference. One Daily Express user Dingle6677, has suggested an alternative option to E10. They say: “I know it's hassle but try half and half 50 per cent of E10 and 50 per cent of E5. “Found fuel consumption (for a) normal car goes fine. Everything is hassle in this country that's the truth.” The Government's “E10 petrol explained” guidance outlines the changes that have been made including whether E5 and E10 can be mixed. It says: “If your vehicle is compatible with E10 petrol, there’s no reason you can’t mix the two grades of petrol (E5 97+ and E10 95+). “It’s perfectly safe to mix them in the same tank or fill up with E5 if E10 is not available.” It also reassures drivers about using E10 petrol in a non-compatible vehicle. It continues, saying: “Simply fill up with E5 (‘97+ octane) petrol next time. “Using a single tank of E10 petrol in a vehicle that is not compatible should not be a major problem. Just make sure you fill up with the correct E5 (‘97+ octane) petrol grade next time.
