East Yorkshire boss urges women to ‘flag down a bus if in need’ after young girl left stranded

The director of East Yorkshire buses has urged women to “flag down a bus if you are in need” and issued a public apology after a 16-year-old girl was left stranded alone at night when a driver refused to let her board. The young girl was returning home from visiting her friends at 9.30pm on Sunday, November 7, when she was refused from boarding the bus. For the latest traffic and travel news, click here. She pleaded with the driver to let her board the bus service from Beverley Bus Station to Dunswell, but he told her to move out of the way instead. He claimed that he could not open the door due to health and safety reasons. The girl's father, Gary Hockney, was upset by the way his daughter was treated as the frightened girl was brought to tears, pleading that she 'just wanted to go home'. The driver of an East Yorkshire bus would not let the 16-year-old girl on the bus The bus service has now issued an apology for the way the girl was treated and said they wanted to assure the public that this is an isolated incident, and people can still count on them to be brought home safely. Area director Ben Gilligan said: “Following recent coverage of the incident on Sunday, November 7, where a teenage girl was refused entry to one of our buses and the open letter that was published on Friday, November 12, I wish to assure the community that this was an isolated incident. “I have met Mr and Mrs Hockney and their daughter and apologised for this, which didn't reflect our usual practice or policies in respect of vulnerable people. “We are also liaising with Reclaim These Streets and are looking forward to their input in how we can improve our procedures at East Yorkshire Buses, including raising awareness among drivers of women's safety.
