Four junctions around Hull where drivers complain of confusion and…

Traffic is a major bone of contention in Hull and has been for a number of years with constant congestion, controversy over cycle lanes, issues around bus lanes and the seemingly never-ending roadworks Some areas are worse than others, either because they are busy or because they are pinch points. But there are a few junctions and roundabouts that seen plain confusing. Unfortunately, some motorists have been guilty of relying on their instincts, rather than reading the road markings and signs. This has led to near misses and, on some occasions, accidents. Derringham Street / Spring Bank This junction has long been a source of confusion. If you are not familiar with the way the road filters, then it can be difficult to interpret. Basically, if you are turning left heading on to Spring Bank West then you need to be in the left hand lane. If you are turning right down Spring Bank then you need to be in the right hand lane. Straightforward so far. The junction on Derringham Street is an ‘accident waiting to happen’ as drivers often confuse the two turn left lanes The confusion comes if you want to go on to Princes Avenue. Even though you are initially turning left, you need to join the right hand lane, indicate left and the join the outside lane in Spring Bank West. Confused? You would not be alone. Drivers regularly enter the left-hand lane in Derringham Street but then cut across traffic to reach the outside lane in Spring Bank. This has caused near misses. A woman from Hull previously told Hull Live: “They need more signs on the side of the road. Everyone just goes in the left lane, so then they cut into your (outside) lane and you’re nearly crashing into them. “One day, I was in the right lane and I went to pull out. But, then a car in the Spring Bank lane pulled out on me, but I couldn’t have moved across because I would have been blocking the lane going in the opposite direction. “I sounded my horn at him and he just carried on. It’s just really annoying, there’s going to be loads more accidents if nothing gets done.” Another woman also suggested that bollards could be used to separate the two lanes to prevent drivers being cut up. If those poles were in the centre of the road, it won’t be as easy for people to cut across lanes,” she added. Until a few years ago, Derringham Street was divided into three lanes at the junction. The lanes were narrow but had the benefit of being less confusing. Stoneferry roundabout Since the new layout was introduced last year, this roundabout has proved a hot topic of debate. Some Hull residents have even called for a petition to address the issues. Since the new three lane layout was introduced, a number of drivers in Hull have complained of dangerous near misses. The changes to the roundabout follow years of work on the Stoneferry corridor and surrounding roads. Raising the issue on the Hull Traffic & Travel Facebook group, Rachel Stansfield wrote: “I think a petition is needed to change the Stoneferry roundabout towards Clough Road/Bankside needs to be created! The amount of people that don’t know how to use the new layout is shocking. “I’m so sick of having to break for people who think I’m in the wrong when I’m in the lane it states to be in when I’m coming from next to pets at home towards bankside as it is the middle lane you use and they have nearly gone into me just because it isn’t typically how you use a roundabout. It’s a stupid layout, but equally people need to read the road.” Carl agreed that it was a problem, writing: “Why should drivers need to change… if I ever had an accident on that roundabout and people tried to blame me, I would have my day in court with my Highway Code in my hand… councils changing roundabouts layouts is a menace.” Ryan did not feel the markings needing changing, just a sign to make it clearer on the approach. He said: “Think it probably needs a road sign putting up ther
