There are currently hundreds of job listings for skilled HGV drivers in Hull and the surrounding areas as the shortage highlighted by recent supply issues has seen the wage offers skyrocket. Some haulage firms are offering a salary of up to £50,000 with added benefits and many are even offering to put potential drivers through their Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) training. Some of the adverts are open to new drivers, all are for immediate starts and many are even offering cash bonuses of thousands of pounds to try and entice the most in-demand skilled workers. Job site indeed has 166 roles within 15 miles of the city of Hull under the HGV driver category, companies hiring include Wren Kitchens, Marston's Brewing, Calor and DHL. Drivers have to work long hours but companies are trying to make the roles more appealing The lack of qualified HGV driver have been blamed in part for recent shortages in fuel supplies which spurred on panic at the pumps over the past few days. RHA boss Rod McKenzie accused ministers of allowing driver shortages to worsen in recent months. He told BBC's Newsnight this week: “We have got a shortage of 100,000 (drivers), when you think that everything we get in Britain comes on the back of a lorry, whether it's fuel or food or clothes or whatever it is, at some point, if there are no drivers to drive those trucks, the trucks aren't moving and we're not getting our stuff.” Job site Totaljobs currently has 112 listings within a 10 mile radius of Hull with the highest wage on offer from Bulkhaul who are promising between £41,900 – £50,220 per year for the right candidate. That listing in particular highlights some of the problems the industry is facing attracting applicants with a working week of between 55-60 hours.
