Hull motorists bite back after coroner says there should be…
Motorists in Hull have argued if older people can safely drive after a senior coroner said they should not be allowed on the roads – stirring up strong feelings on both sides of the debate. The change was proposed after a 95-year-old driver hit a woman using a pedestrian crossing in West Sussex, knocking her from her mobility scooter and killing her. Under current law, drivers over 70 are required to apply for a new licence every three years but no medical checks are undertaken. Penelope Schofield, the Senior Coroner for West Sussex, has now called for governing bodies to look into imposing an upper age limit on driving licences, or a mandatory test resit for senior drivers renewing their license. This was met with outrage by senior motorists in Hull, claiming age has nothing to do with driving ability. They screech past you on the road, round blind bends and tailgate other drivers. So leave older drivers alone.” Sue agreed, adding: “There are many people who cause accidents. Not always older ones. Look at the boy racers etc.” Kath was also keen to turn the attention onto young drivers: “I think the coroner should look again. You hear of more accidents from younger drivers. I’m almost 72 and was overtaken yesterday by someone in their early 20s on a blind bend, so is it my fault for being over 70 and doing the speed limit?” Philip added: “Try stopping young newly licenced drivers from getting high powered cars they cannot handle.
