Hull has been listed among the top 10 UK cities for growth in bus usage. The city secured the tenth spot in the annual bus statistics report, with other locations on the list including London, Brighton and Hove, Nottingham, Reading, Southampton, the West Midlands, Bristol, Tyne and Wear, and York. Across the nation, there was an 8 per cent rise in bus usage up until March 2024, according to the most recent Department for Transport data for 2023/2024. This surge brought the total to a rate of 61 journeys per person across Great Britain in the year leading up to March 2024, compared to a 19 per cent increase in the previous year. This means that bus usage is currently at 88 per cent of the levels seen in 2019/20, as the industry strives to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hull Bus Alliance, comprising Hull City Council, East Yorkshire Buses and Stagecoach East Midlands, is acting on its bus service improvement plan (BSIP), with the aim of boosting connectivity across the area and increasing passenger numbers.
