Hull’s traffic danger hotspots revealed with 686 collisions city-wide in…
We all know about the problems with the roads in Hull and how we are constantly held up in traffic jams – but how dangerous are they? Latest figures published by collisonmap.uk show the city has a higher-than-average collision rate and is well above the national average. The map categorises collisions into ‘fatal’, ‘serious’ and ‘slight’, with figures coming from 2021 statistics. It shows there are a number of hotspots for crashes and it will come as no surprise that most of them centre on roundabouts and junctions. Though there is quite a spread throughout Hull, there are a few areas across the city which have a concentrated number of collisions. Meanwhile, there were 97 collisions involving pedestrians with four sadly losing their lives. A total of 15 collisions involved buses and ten involving lorries. Motorcycles were involved in 107 collisions with three fatalities. Those familiar with Hull’s roads will not be shocked by some of the junctions and roundabouts that have proven risk areas for prangs and more serious crashes. The reasons vary with some areas just being very busy, while others appear to have confusing road markings or traffic-light sequences. One stretch of Holderness Road just west of the junction there saw three more slight collisions and one serious crash in which four children were injured. Along Holderness Road as a whole in 2021, there were 43 slight collisions and 14 serious collisions – but thankfully no fatalities. Another hot spot is the Anlaby Road / Boothferry Road roundabout which had three slight collisions in 2021. There were also two serious incidents with both involving two cars and a cyclist. There were also six slight collisions at the roundabout in Gipsyville and two further slight collisions close by on Hessle Road. Another hotspot which will not be a surprise to regular Spring Bank users is near the lights at Princes Avenue and around the junction of Derringham Street. There were four slight collisions and one serious incident involving a car and a pedestrian. There was one crash involving two cars and a cyclist close to Middleton Street, and another just a few yards further down also involving two cars and a cyclist. There was another serious collision at the junction with West Parade involving a car and a pedestrian, and an incident at the junction with Park Street involving two vehicles and a cyclist.
