A national cycling campaigner has urged The Humber Bridge Board to reopen footpaths and install physical safety measures instead in order to prevent deaths. Safety nets and increasing the height of the parapet could help cut the toll of suicides from the bridge, according to Duncan Dollimore of Cycling UK. He criticised the board for the closure of the path last month and highlighted the U-turn on a £4million plan to increase the height of the parapet several years ago. The bridge's footpaths were closed on Saturday, April 3, after six deaths were recorded in just 31 days. While it helps to safeguard those at risk of harm, the closure left cyclists who live and work on separate sides of the river without a safe route.
