Humber Bridge to close overnight for repairs to Storm Ciara damage

The Humber Bridge will be closed for just the third time in its history as urgent repairs take place. The work will be carried out overnight during a weekend in October, but the precise date will depend on weather conditions and will be confirmed later. Click here for more traffic and travel stories. The Humber Bridge, which has just celebrated its 40th birthday, has only been closed to traffic twice before in its history. Work will be taking place near the Barton towers to change two bearings. The closure is set to take place in October, but the date hasn't been decided yet These secure the deck to the tower whilst allowing it to move in response to changing weather and traffic conditions. Defects in the bearings were spotted during inspections after the bridge was hit by 80mph winds during Storm Ciara in February 2020. Officials warned that if the bearings aren’t replaced, the bridge could risk becoming “unserviceable”. Within weeks of the work being completed, the cones that are currently restricting the carriages to a single lane will be removed.
