The Humber Bridge is to close for one night this weekend to all drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Bridge managers say roads will close in both directions from 9pm on Saturday October 9. The bridge will then reopen on 7am Sunday, October 10. Click here for more traffic and travel stories. The bridge, which has just celebrated its 40th birthday, has only been closed to traffic twice before in its history. The complete closure is necessary for vital maintenance work says the authority. Delaying to a later date could not be relied on as “we move towards winter” say bridge managers. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians will all have to use alternative routes. Provisions have been made to allow emergency services vehicles to cross the bridge if required. The work includes changing two bearings at the Barton end of the bridge which connect the bridge deck to the towers and helps carry the weight of the bridge and traffic. The work has been brought forward after the bridge was hit by 80mph winds during Storm Ciara in February 2020. Cones have been in place while inspections have been carried out underneath the road deck to assess the damage caused by the storm. Within weeks of the work being completed, the cones will be removed. Your Hull Live email newsletter Get the latest updat
