New legislation is being proposed in Italy that would see cyclists required by law to have licence plates, indicators, insurance, and to wear helmets. It is hoped that the proposed new law would reduce the number of deaths caused by road accidents in Italy. With this in mind, Hull Live asked its readers what they thought of the proposal, and whether they felt it would be a good idea to see it replicated in the UK. Naturally, Hull’s road users were quick to share their opinions on whether they thought this would benefit the city, with plenty of differing opinions being put forward. Some readers suggested that cyclists would be more inclined to obey the laws of the road if they had a licence plate as their bikes could be traced and they would be held accountable for any violations. Some people even suggested that introducing licence plates would make bicycle theft less regular, as stolen bikes could be traced by police. Kasha asked: “Right and how will having a licence plate and insurance reduce accidents?” Steven replied: “You’d be able to trace the cyclists who knock people over and ride off for one, or the ones who kick ya mirrors off when they ride by, also able to trace stolen bikes with cctv as they ride away. Just a few things that can help cut some of it out and with insurance pay for damage they cause to other vehicles and pedestrians.” Neil added: “If an idiot drives without license and/or insurance, it will lead to loss of vehicle. If they continue, it will lead to loss of liberty. That will help reduce accidents.
