Lorry driver suffered medical episode in A63 crash as witnesses say they are ‘lucky to be alive’

A lorry driver is believed to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel as witnesses spoke of their horror following a crash on the A63 on Thursday. Drivers looked on in shock after a white HGV 'careered off the road' near the St Andrew's Dock slip road just before 8am. It is reported that the driver of a white lorry suffered a medical emergency at the wheel which led to his vehicle leaving the road and crashing into vegetation on the verge. He said: “I wasn’t in the car at the time, my partner called me in tears as it happened right before her eyes. “She had just dropped me off in the city and was heading back to take my two young children to school. “Someone was looking over them this morning thank god as if she was three or four seconds ahead the lorry would have taken all three of my family with it.” Other witnesses reported hearing a loud bang as the lorry left the carriageway and hit some bushes and trees at the side of the busy route out of Hull city centre. A lane closure has been in place for nearly seven hours Another man said: “I just heard a loud bang, it must have been impact of driver going through fence alongside the dock.” The driver received medical attention from Yorkshire Ambulance crews for the emergency at the wheel and a lane still remains closed as the emergency services attempt to safely move the lorry. The incident was first reported by the AA at 7.47am. It said: “One lane closed and queuing traffic due to accident, multiple lorries involved on A63 Clive Sullivan Way Westbound at Daltry Street. “Congestion to A1079. Lanes one (of two) is closed, the entry slip road is also partially blocked.” The police later confirmed that other vehicles stopped at the scene had been assisting the driver of the white HGV that left the road.
