As the weather gets colder, gritters are sent out in numbers to help keep our roads safe and usable. Driving can be particularly dangerous when temperatures drop to sub-zero, causing moisture to freeze and increasing the odds of motorists losing control on the slippery road surface. Gritters spread rock salt across the road in high-risk areas. Water normally freezes at 0°C but adding salt prevents water from solidifying until temperatures reach as low as -6°C to -8°C. This greatly reduces the likelihood of accidents. As the mercury is set to drop well below 0°C this week, including lows of -2°C on Wednesday, we take a look at the key gritting routes for Hull and East Yorkshire.
