Commuters who board trains at Hull may have never seen Peter Ferens – but his job has probably kept thousands of people safe over the past two years. The cleaner, based at Hull Paragon Station, starts work at 6am every day making sure the station is sanitised and free from rubbish and graffiti. “Keeping customers and colleagues safe is our priority and I’m extremely proud of the work both myself and the sanitation team do and have done during the pandemic,” he says. Peter is being hailed an 'unsung hero' for his contribution to 22 years' worth of cleaning in the past 10 months. Thanks to him and a team of 149 others across the North and Scotland, more than 168,000 litres of cleaning solution was used in stations last year – enough to fill 557 bathtubs.
