A police officer miraculously survived a horrific crash during a late-night high-speed chase. Pictures of the police vehicle involved in the M62 crash late on Friday night show a mangled wreck after it collided with a bridge. The roof of the car was removed to cut the officer free. A red Seat Ibiza – which police were attempting to stop when the crash happened – was also destroyed. Click here for more Hull and East Yorkshire news It has been confirmed that one officer, who works for West Yorkshire Police, suffered serious leg injuries but his condition is not life-threatening. The crash happened when two police vehicles tried to stop the Seat as it headed along the eastbound carriageway of the M62 near West Cowick at 11.24pm on Friday (September 3). West Yorkshire Police, whose officers were chasing the Seat, said in a statement: “A police officer suffered serious leg injuries as a result and he was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but non-life threatening condition. “Four people from the non-police vehicle were arrested and remain in custody. Three of them were injured – one suffered neck and back injuries and two others suffered minor injuries. “Due to the nature of the incident the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been notified.” Find the latest traffic news near you The road was closed in both directions until Saturday lunchtime, with the eastbound carriageway only reopening late in the afternoon. A number of drivers were trapped in queues for more than seven hours before police allowed them to move on – including a pregnant woman and a family with a young child. Read more here. Investigators were closely examining the scene and police dogs were brought in to scour the nearby area. One witness who saw the aftermath of the crash described seeing the air ambulance and a number of fire engines at the scene. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, who attended the scene along with crews from Humberside, confirmed people had to be cut free from both a police vehicle and the Seat.
