Moment lorry drives over Humber Bridge despite closure for high…
This is the moment a high-sided lorry drove over the Humber Bridge during Storm Otto. Bridge bosses closed the carriageway to high-sided vehicles from 6am on Friday morning, after the Met Office warned of wind gusts of up to 70mph in parts of the North. But it seems that not everyone was paying attention. While it was not clear if the lorry driver was aware of the restrictions on this occasion, the bridge board has previously warned of some drivers deliberately flouting the rules, “putting themselves and others at risk”. A HGV jack-knifed in high winds on the A1, while in Hull a tree crashed down across Boothferry Road. Thankfully, no one was hurt. In 2018, the bridge board was forced to issue a list of vehicles banned from crossing the bridge during wind restrictions, due to the number of drivers failing to take heed of the rules. It includes furniture vans, articulated HGCs, motorhomes, high-sided HGVs and double-decker buses. Despite this, in February last year, Hull Live counted 10 high-sided vehicles an hour crossing the bridge during wind restrictions – just weeks after a van had blown over, causing nine hours of delays. Motorcycles are also banned in these circumstances. This morning, the bridge board stated: “Strong winds – We are closed to high-sided vehicles and wind vulnerable vehicles 17/02/23 06.00.” Restrictions were lifted at 1pm.
