Freetown Way will be returning to two lanes of traffic, with the cycle lanes being moved onto the pavement, after Hull City Council secured Government funding for the redevelopment. The reconfigured road will not be completed until well into the new year, with work set to start early in 2024, following further design work later this year. The segregated cycle lanes currently in use, which reduced Freetown Way to a single lane for motorists in each direction, were funded by the Government as part of a roll-out of an Active Travel scheme during the early part of the pandemic. However, since the changes were made, lengthy traffic queues have become a regular sight along the route, particularly on the approach to Blundell’s Corner, where Beverley Road meets Spring Bank and Ferensway. Following the announcement that Freetown Way would return to two lanes of traffic, motorists in Hull were quick to give their verdict on the plans.
