A new year brings new changes, and the roads are no exception. A series of driving laws and rules are due to come into force in 2023 that will affect millions of drivers. They include changes to fuel duty, parking and much more. It follows the introduction of a spate of laws in 2022, including much stricter rules on when you can use a mobile phone behind the wheel. Manufacturers are also making changes, with all new cars now being fitted with speed limiters. Here are the law changes that we will see in 2023 for those on the road. That means the “temporary” cut is due to end on March 23, 2023. The changes caused controversy last spring, when some petrol stations were accused of failing to pass on the savings to drivers amid the growing cost of living crisis. So will fuel duty go up next spring? Chancellor Jeremy Hunt failed to address the issue in his Autumn Statement, but the Office for Budget Responsibility suggested it could rise by 12p. The Treasury insisted no decision had been made. Watch this space! New licence plates: Every year, the UK introduces a new set of number plates and 2023 will not be different. In March you may be able to see a 23 registration plate number on the roads, and in September new cars will be registered under the ’73’ plate. Pavement parking ban: A huge change is due to come into force in a part of the UK in 2023, with Scotland set to ban drivers from parking on dropped kerbs and pavements, in order to improve accessibility. The changes were agreed in 2019 but were delayed due to Covid, and campaigners have been pressing for implementation to begin as soon as possible.
