New road camera van catches nearly 300 drivers in just…

Nearly 300 motorists who were using their mobile phones while driving or not wearing a seatbelt have been caught by a new road safety van in just five days. Officials at Safer Roads Humber caught 279 people committing the motoring offences around East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire between Monday and Friday last week. The new van, which uses artificial intelligence to detect law-breaking motorists, was touring the region as part of a trial. Motorists caught on their phones while driving face £200 fines and six penalty points. People who do not wear a seatbelt face a fine of £100. The driver is responsible for any passengers under the age of 14. Read more: Motorcyclist, 44, killed in East Yorkshire crash A spokesperson for Safer Roads Humber said: “The trial is now over but we will review the trial and decide whether it’s technology we want to use in the future.” The high-tech van is fitted with several cameras and artificial intelligence which processes the footage before an officer checks it. In Hull, 73 motorists were caught out by the technology, 56 were caught in South Cave, 55 in Willerby, 55 in Grimsby and 40 in Scunthorpe. The new van uses AI technology The figures for the week are as follows: Monday, March 27 – South Cave 22 mobile phones 34 seatbelt offences Tuesday, March 28 – Clough Road, Hull 13 mobile phones 60 seatbelt offences Wednesday, March 29 – Grimsby 7 mobile phones 48 seatbelt offences Thursday, March 30 – Willerby 7 mobile phones 48 seatbelt offences Friday, March 31 – Scunthorpe 5 mobile phones 35 seatbelt offences In total, there were 54 motorists caught using a mobile phone and 225 not wearing a seatbelt. Safer Roads Humber is a partnership involving police and local councils. It said some people may be offered an education course rather than be prosecuted for their offences.
