P&O Ferries will be barred from entering UK ports unless they pay staff the UK minimum wage, it has been claimed. The disgraced company is likely to have to almost double the pay of its agency staff, as the Government is keen to push through legislation to close pay loopholes that the company have previously exploited. P&O Ferries recently sacked 800 workers, that earned, on average, £36k a year, in favour of replacing them for a foreign crew that would be paid less than minimum wage. The current loophole allows for ships that make journeys in international waters to pay their staff much lower international rates, and it has been revealed P&O are paying their new crew an average of £5.50 an hour.
