Scrapping all-day bus lanes in Hull ‘could make traffic issues…

Returning bus lanes in Hull to peak-time only enforcement could lead to increased traffic in the city, it has been claimed. Hull City Council said “most” of the 22,068 people who responded to a huge transport survey argued all-day bus lanes should be scrapped and instead operate only during rush hours in one direction, while remaining fully open to traffic at other times of day. Mike Ross, the council leader, said he had ordered a report on the potential change. Now national transport charity Campaign for Better Transport has written to Cllr Ross to urge him not to go ahead with proposed changes. The charity is warning that the plan would increase traffic congestion, reduce the reliability of buses and affect passenger numbers. Similar sized cities, like Leicester and Oxford, are expanding bus lanes and will see the benefits of higher rates of economic growth, lower rates of air pollution and less congestion. We strongly urge Hull City Council to reconsider these proposed changes.” Other changes could include improvements to the off-road cycle network with the focus being placed on off-road, properly segregated cycle lanes, and “quality” of results rather than “quantity”.
