‘Significant milestone’ in Myton Bridge work reached but closures continue

Work to repair Myton Bridge has reached a ‘significant milestone’, according to Highways England. It may provide cold comfort to motorists who have been stuck in horrendous traffic jams over the last few weekends but the bulk of the work has now been completed. However, there is still one more weekend to go and possibly some overnight closures. In an update provided on Monday, Highways England says the maintenance is on schedule and the crucial work will prevent the need for unplanned repairs in the future. Read more: Three-week closure on major Hull road for 'essential works' on footbridge A spokesperson said: “The refurbishment of the A63 Myton Swing Bridge in Hull has reached a key milestone as all four bearings have now been made and installed on the landmark structure. The replacement of the bearings is an important part of the programme of repairs and renewals of the bridge, which carries the A63 over the River Hull. “Several bridge swings have been successfully undertaken to test the bridge and the new bearings and it is operating very well. Successfully completing the replacement of the bearings on this complex moving bridge in a safe and timely way is a very significant milestone in the delivery of the overall project. “In November, we began major repairs on the structure including work on the bridge joints and bearings, renewal of waterproofing, barrier, and lighting improvements.
