Speed limit set to be dropped on west Hull ‘rat…
A new 20mph zone is set to be created in a west Hull street currently being used as a ‘rat run’. Councillors say safety measures are needed in Selby Street to tackle the problem of speeding motorists using it as a short-cut between Boulevard and St. George’s Road. As well as the current speed limit being reduced, other features of the scheme are expected to include physical traffic calming works including a speed table at the junction with Glasgow Street and the creation of wider footpaths. The proposed scheme being drawn up by highways officials at Hull City Council comes after a speed survey carried out in the street logged “numerous” cases of speeding vehicles in the early hours of the morning and during the evening. Overall, 15 percent of traffic movements recorded during the survey were above the current 30mph limit and reached the necessary threshold for enforcement action. Speaking at a Riverside area committee, Councillor Daren Hale said: “In terms of slowing speeds down on Selby Street, we are already in talks about getting one of those slow-your-speed signs on Woodcock Street which is the other part of the rat run so these proposals would be most welcome but we need to see the detailed costings.
