Stagecoach boss says parking in Hull is so cheap people don’t use buses

Hull has recently experienced a decline in bus passenger numbers after bucking downward national trends for years. Speaking at a city council scrutiny meeting, Stagecoach East Midlands’ managing director Matt Cranwell said: “We have currently got some extremely cheap parking in the city centre. “When you are talking about paying £3 for all-day parking, it undermines what we are trying to do in encouraging modal shift.” Both Stagecoach and fellow operator East Yorkshire have invested heavily in new buses in recent months. A fleet of 31 new buses in Hull costing £5.7m was launched by Stagecoach in July while East Yorkshire is about to introduce eleven brand new double deckers to its fleet. The new vehicles being rolled out by both companies feature onboard wi-fi and USB connections as standard along with new seating and greener fuel technology. Mr Cranwell said his firm’s new fleet had been well-received by the public but said more needed to be done to persuade motorists to consider switching to bus travel. “As well as improving the vehicles, it’s also about improving infrastructure and road space to ensure consistent journey times.
