Three roads in west Hull will be reduced to single lanes for at least two weeks while works take place to strengthen almost 100-year-old flood defences. National Avenue, Priory Road and County Road North will be affected by the works on the Setting Dyke culverts, which date back more than 90 years. Hull City Council’s Cabinet has agreed to tender a contract for improvements, with a budget of £750,000. Cllr Mark Ieronimo, the Flood Prevention Portfolio Holder, said the culverts played a very important role in reducing flooding and it was essential they are kept in good working order. Read more: Humber Street closure extended- but shops and bars remain open A report to the Cabinet stated that at least two weeks of traffic management would be required per culvert and advised that the whole project could take more than two months. The oldest of the Setting Dyke culverts, in National Avenue and Priory Road, were built in 1930. A third in County Road North was built in 1964. The culverts were built out of reinforced concrete and easements found they now need to be fitted with Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) in order to remain fit for purpose. The report stated that without the works, 7.5-tonne weight restrictions would have to be enforced at the National Avenue and Priory Road culverts.
