‘Thug’ punched taxi driver for ‘no reason at all’ after…
An ex-soldier viciously kicked and punched a taxi driver for “absolutely no reason at all” in a violent and “shameful” attack after he had drunk a bottle of vodka. Café owner Leon Shakespeare had a history of violence and he had now “reached the end of the line” after being branded a “thug”. The courts had “bent over backwards” in the past to help him, Hull Crown Court heard. Shakespeare, 35, of Wilton Road, Hornsea, admitted assaulting the taxi driver, causing actual bodily harm, and criminal damage to the taxi on April 17. He also admitted possessing cocaine on April 18. Shakespeare sat in the front passenger seat, talking to the driver, but he changed his mind about where he wanted to go and asked the driver to go to the Rampant Horse pub in Hall Road, Hull. Shakespeare told the driver to stop there and to wait. He suddenly grabbed the driver and told him: “Look at me. Come here.” The driver got out of the taxi, which was based at a Beverley company, to give Shakespeare time to cool down.
