Since 2018, the Environment Agency has alternately closed two roads in the area, Bankside and Wincolmlee, to carry out flood defence improvement works. Now, it has been announced Wilncomlee, from Wilmington Bridge to Air Street, will be closed from January to June 2020, after initial hopes no further road closures would be needed. A diversion will be put in place for those travelling from Wincolmlee to Bankside, instead taking drivers from Fountain Road to Bridlington Avenue, Beverley Road, Sculcoates Lane and Air Street. Business in Bankside will be accessed via Air Street, and will remain open as usual. The Environment Agency said: “So far we have installed over 1,600m of new defences since the project commenced.
