Wincolmlee road works will now drag on until July – two months longer than planned

Part of Wincolmlee will remain closed to traffic until July for essential gas main works to be completed. The section of the road between Air Street and Fountain Road, near the Wilmington swing bridge, closed in February with the work to repair the damaged main originally scheduled to last just eight weeks. But the initial target completion date of April 22 has come and gone with the road still closed and the works ongoing. Now city councillors have been told the road will remain closed until July 1 when Northern Gas Networks is finally expected to complete the upgrade work. Speaking at a Wyke Area Committee meeting, the council’s group highways manager Ruth Stephenson said the delay has been caused by the need to manufacture new parts for the gas main. She said: “When the gas company went into the ground they discovered the gas main was much older than had previously been thought.
