(Image: Hull City Council) Hull City Council has announced the reopening of East Park gates. The entrance on Holderness Road was closed to vehicles in 2020 due to Covid-19 social distancing restrictions. According to the council, East Park now features additional parking spaces, including accessible spaces and a new footpath. There are new signs and lines for a new road layout, with a one-way system, as well as added speed tables. Only a limited section of the road within the park is accessible to vehicles. The council says this is to ‘ensure one of Hull’s most popular parks remains a safe and enjoyable place for all visitors’. The scheme was initially developed in response to issues raised by the Choices and Rights Disability Coalition. Now, tactile paving, designed to aid individuals with visual impairments, has also been installed at crossing points. Hull City Council hosted public engagement sessions in December 2023 at Woodford Leisure Centre and the enhancements have been shaped by the feedback gathered during these events. A poll by Hull Daily Mail readers in 2023 stated that just under 52 per cent of those who took part in a snap poll on the website wanted the main gates in Holderness Road to remain closed to vehicles. However, Hull Daily Mail contacted Hull City Council on July 28, with the council responding that “Further information on the planned improvements at East Park will be issued in due course.” A one-way system has been implemented. (Image: Hull City Council) Cllr Rob Pritchard, the council’s portfolio holder for culture, leisure and customer services, said: “East Park is one of Hull’s most cherished green spaces and ensuring it is accessible for all visitors is a top priority for the council. “The reopening of the main entrance gate on Holderness Road, along with the other improvements, has significantly enhanced the park’s inclusivity, functionality and appeal, providing free and safe activities for visitors, tying in with the council’s ethos of promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. “We would like to thank our park users for their patience and understanding whilst these works were completed and hope that they enjoy the improvements for many years to come.” Is Hull the best place to live in Yorkshire?
