Traffic management measures ranging from multi-way temporary signals to full road closures will be implemented across several key routes. Among the most notable disruption is the ongoing full closure of Drypool Bridge for vital repair and strengthening works, alongside major highway improvements on Alfred Gelder Street – both expected to last until late July. A breakdown of the active and upcoming roadworks scheduled to impact the city beyond July 4 includes: Alfred Gelder Street: Highway improvement works are ongoing between Lowgate and Drypool Bridge. A full road closure is in place from June 15, 2026, and is expected to last until late July 2026. Ark Royal: Utility works by Northern Gas Networks will require multi-way signals from July 13, 2026, until July 31, 2026. Arnold Lane: O2 will be carrying out utility works under multi-way signals from July 6, 2026, to July 10, 2026. Ashcombe Road: Footway excavations to connect gas, water, and electricity services for a new housing development will cause disruption. Multi-way signals will be in place from July 6, 2026, to July 17, 2026. Barnes Way: Similar utility service excavations for a new development will see multi-way signals deployed from July 6, 2026, to July 17, 2026. County Road South: Core investigatory works by the council from numbers 109 to 135 will require two-way signals on July 8, 2026. Drypool Bridge: The full closure of the bridge to all vehicles and pedestrians remains in place for major repair and strengthening works.
