Alex Smith, 31, was riding in challenging, rainy conditions on Dunswell Lane when he came off his bike and was crushed beneath it. The Bransholme man said life had been hard with the death of his dad when he was 14, plus missed diagnoses of ADHD and autism. He was “finally on the right path with the love of my life” when the accident happened on October 1, the day of his induction at Heron Foods in North Ferriby. Alex said he initially planned to travel on the main roads, but “jumped the gun” and went for the country lanes, thinking they would be safer due to having less traffic. The next thing he knew, he was in a ditch and his leg was “exploding with pain.” He said it was an “extremely lucky set of circumstances” that led to him being rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary. Alex explained: “Through pure adrenaline, I managed to launch the bike that had pinned me down off me, managed to get up on one leg and start to assess my situation. “Within minutes, a transport ambulance came by chance and parked up to offer assistance. This was a godsend as they contacted services further to get me out the ditch and out of harm’s way in terms of hypothermia and being stuck in the ditch in agony.” The ‘massive haematoma clot’ in Alex’s left leg (Image: Supplied) He added: “The ladies from the transport ambulance made it all happen, as within half an hour all the services had turned up. Six firemen had to strap me to a chair and lift me out.” The last thing he could remember before the crash was “reducing his speed” as he turned a corner. Unfortunately, the pressure of the bike on Alex’s left leg caused a “massive haematoma clot”. In hospital, he was given morphine and told there was a serious risk the clot could burst which would be potentially life-threatening. Since Alex has been released from hospital, he said he’s had more than 10 appointments in the trauma clinic, orthopaedics, x-rays, MRI scans, and ultrasound scans. It’s going to be several months to a year plus for recovery.” He has created a fundraiser which he hopes will help get him back on track after the crash. It would enable him to pay for travel to and from medical appointments, and help him get out of debt. If you want to help out, you can donate here. Do you feel safe on the roads?
