A63 in Hull reopens following ‘serious incident’ – updates
Part of the A63 in Hull was closed for several hours this morning following a “serious collision” in the early hours. The road was shut both ways from St Andrew's Quay to the Ferensway junction in the city centre from around 4am. The westbound carriageway was also closed beyond Ferensway up to the A1165 at Drypool. In a statement at around 4.30am, Humberside Police said: “Due to an ongoing incident on Daltry street flyover, the A63 is closed in both directions from St Andrews Quay to the Ferensway junction. This closure will remain in place for some time. Please find an alternative route to allow emergency services to work safely.” National Highways has described the incident as a “serious collision” and, just after 5.30am, said the closure is “expected to be in place for several hours this morning”. The eastbound carriageway was reopened by around 9.40am but the westbound side remained closed. National Highways then confirmed the westbound side had reopened just after 12pm. Emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway in the area of Daltry Street flyover at around 4am. Share 12:09 KEY EVENT Westbound A63 reopens National Highways says the westbound A63 is now back open. In a statement on social media just after 12pm, it said: “The A63 has re-opened westbound between the A1165 (#Drypool) and the A1166 following a serious collision. “Thank you for your patience. Please have a safe onward journey.” No further details on the nature of the incident are available at this time but will be posted when they are released. Share 11:05 Mark Page Bus delays ‘up to 90 minutes’ Stagecoach says delays of up to an hour and a half are being reported across its network. In a statement on social media just after 11am the company said: “We are experiencing severe delays of up to 90 minutes across the network due to the closure of the A63 and the diversion of all traffic. “We are doing our best to keep the app updated but please allow extra time for your journey today.” It added: “Due to congestion around Hull City Centre as a result of the A63 closure and to manage driving hours, the 1040 Service 350 from Hull to Scunthorpe will not operate today. “As a result, the 1215 from Scunthorpe to Hull, will also not operate.” Share 10:08 KEY EVENT Eastbound carriageway reopens The eastbound carriageway has now reopened with traffic easing in that direction. However, the westbound side of the A63 remains closed between the A1165 (Drypool) and St Andrew's Quay. Share 08:33 Mark Page ‘Significant delays’ to bus services Bus companies are “experiencing significant delays” due to the effects of the A63 closure. In a social media statement, East Yorkshire Buses said: “We’re experiencing significant delays across the network in Hull due to the closure of the A63. Traffic is extremely slow, and our teams are working hard to get services back on schedule. Thank you for your patience and understanding.” Meanwhile, Stagecoach said: “Due to the closure of the A63 we are experiencing major traffic delays across the Hull network. Whilst no buses are on diversion we do have buses running up to 1hr late. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.” Share 08:22 Mark Page Long delays around Hull due to the closure There are long queues around Hull due to the closure with heavy traffic not only on the parts of the A63 that are still open but on other routes into the city centre. The TomTom Traffic Index is reporting a congestion level of 164 per cent, which is “116 per cent above what's usual at this time”. The travel time in Hull on average at the moment to go 10km (6.2 miles) is just over 40 minutes – 18 minutes above the norm at this time. There is currently no indication when the closure will be lifted. It has published diversion routes as follows and suggested drivers “allow extra journey time” adding: “Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.” Road users travelling eastbound are advised to follow the Solid Diamond symbol on road signs Driving East, exit the A63 using Western Interchange Junction exit slip road and proceed to the end of the slip road. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto A15 and proceed along this road for approximately 500m to the roundabout with the A1105. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto A1105 and proceed along this road for approximately 4 miles to the junction with the A1079 (Ferensway). At the junction, turn left onto A1079 and proceed along this road for approximately 500m to the junction with the A165. At the junction, turn right onto A165 and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile to the junction with the A1033. At the junction, turn right onto A1033 and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile to the junction with the A63 (Southcoates Roundabout). At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit to join the A1033 Eastbound. Road users travelling westbound are advised to follow the Hollow Triangle symbol on road signs Driving West, exit the A63 using Mount Pleasant Roundabout Junction exit slip road and proceed to the end of the slip road. At the roundabout, take the 4th exit onto A1033 and proceed along this road for approximately 700m to the junction with the A165. At the junction, turn left onto A165 and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile to the junction with the A1079. At the junction, turn left onto A1079 (Ferensway) and proceed along this road for approximately 500m to the junction with the A1105. At the junction, turn right onto A1105 and proceed along this road for approximately 5 miles to the roundabout with the A15. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit on onto A15 and proceed along this road for approximately 800m to the junction for the entry slip onto the A63 Westbound.
