Next step taken on project to strengthen Sutton Road flyover

It comes after a principal inspection carried out in October 2020 revealed issues including “extensive concrete spalling” which can eventually weaken a structure over time. It also found there was exposure of the deck’s main reinforcement. As such, a “comprehensive strengthening scheme” is being planned on the flyover which takes Sutton Road over the Trans Pennine Trail on the stretch between Leads Road and Gillshill Road. Hull City Council has now appointed local engineering consultancy Mason Clark Associates to move forward with works on the structure to maintain its safety and reliability. It is set to carry out structural surveys and develop detailed designs for the future strengthening project. Once this is completed, the building works will follow. The timescale for these has not yet been revealed. The council says the project is part of its five-year infrastructure plan. Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: “Sutton Road flyover plays a strategically vital role in Hull’s transport network, forming part of the eastern ring road and supporting thousands of journeys each day. “The appointment of Mason Clark Associates is an important step in maintaining the condition of the structure and ensuring this key route remains safe and usable.
