Michael Redfern described his niece, Layla Redfern, as “full of life” and “always making us laugh” before the tragic incident on Thursday, November 13. Layla was walking to school when she struck by a car in Holderness Road at around 7.45am. In a statement at the time, Humberside Police said a 12-year-old girl had sustained “serious injuries”. “It is reported a silver Mercedes E220 convertible, and a pedestrian were in collision near to the pedestrian crossing between Bilton roundabout and Diadem roundabout,” a spokesperson for the force said. A 26-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. An air ambulance arrived on the scene and Layla was airlifted to hospital in Sheffield. The schoolgirl suffered a severe brain injury and has been in a coma and undergone multiple surgeries, her uncle said. Michael said: “She got airlifted straight to Sheffield hospital and there she was in a coma for two weeks. She still can’t speak, she can’t sit, has had some of her skull taken out to relieve the pressure. She can’t eat, she can’t have any fluids, it’s all through tubes. Michael said his sister, Sarah Redfern, and his mum, Anita Redfern, have been at Layla’s side in the hospital “since the second it happened”. He said Layla is constantly “back and forwards for surgery” and the traumatic ordeal has been very stressful for the family.
