The work was done to allow the introduction of cycle lanes on the major city centre road. Just over half a decade later, work is set to begin at the site in February to revert the road back to two lanes of traffic in each direction. This follows a 2024 survey where over 80% of respondents supported removing the on-road cycle lanes to help improve traffic flow and reduce city-centre congestion. Cycle-Optimised Protected Signals (CYCLOPS) will be introduced at major junctions like Blundell’s Corner and Witham. These junctions use a unique ‘ring’ design to separate cyclists and pedestrians from vehicles, allowing them to cross safely and turn right without conflicting with traffic. As part of the upgrades, the final 30m section of the northbound bus lane on Ferensway will be permanently removed. This change is said to be necessary to accommodate the new CYCLOPS layout and is scheduled for the later stages of the project to minimise disruption. Work to replace worn-out footpaths on North Bridge will begin on Monday, January 12.
