Steven Hunter, 64, has been doing the job for 38 years. In that time he has taught grandma Wendy Greenwood, her son Paul Burdick, and his son Finlay Burdick. He said: “I’ve taught them all to drive from scratch and got them all through their driving test. They are my first-ever three generations.” Recalling when Finlay passed, Steven said: “I stand out the side of the car while the examiner fills out the pass certificate. I said to her, with pride in my voice, ‘He’s the third generation – I’ve taught his dad and his grandma. “She said, ‘Ooh, I bet that makes you feel old.’ I never thought about it on that level. I was happy I’d got a third generation through their driving test, but I suppose if I’ve had three generations, I must have been doing it a very long time.” Steven admitted he would “hang the keys up straight away” if he won the lottery, but said, as hard as the job can be, it is enormously rewarding when a student passes their test. Many do so on the first attempt, he said. Steven said it is increasingly common for 17-year-olds to learn to drive, but when he was young, most people started out with a bicycle and had to work and save up for lessons. “There are an awful lot more people wanting to learn to drive these days, but there aren’t a lot more driving instructors.” Pre-Covid, Steven said there were more driving instructors, but many went into other areas such as delivery driving or taxis to earn money during lock…
