A63 chaos with ‘tailbacks to Hessle’ after weekend roadworks

Frustrated motorists have complained of being stuck in the A63 heading into Hull for more than half an hour with “tailbacks to Hessle” this morning. National Highways shut the road over the weekend as part of the A63 improvement scheme. Now drivers have complained about the “new layout” which is described as “confusing”. Writing on Hull Live's Traffic & Travel Facebook page, a driver said: “Queued from Humber Bridge today. After the flyover, there are two separate single lanes going eastbound into Hull, just wide enough for an HGV, with concrete bollards on either side. What could possibly go wrong?” Hull Live has approached National Highways for comment. Traffic reporting service Inrix said: “Queueing traffic due to traffic problem on A63 Clive Sullivan Way Eastbound at A1166 Brighton Street (St Andrews Quay).” People have also reported long queues on Anlaby Road this morning. Meanwhile, in east Hull, someone else claimed Clive Sullivan Way heading into Hull had been slow. 14:38 Sofie Jackson National Highways statement A National Highways spokesperson said: “We have made some slight changes to the road layout and signage on the A63 eastbound into Hull city centre, which came into effect this morning. “New, clearly-marked signs now show exits for the A1079, city centre and Princes Dock Street before the junction at Ferensway, where we are now asking drivers to keep in the left-hand lane. “We haven’t changed the number of available lanes. Drivers should continue to use both lanes to continue eastbound on the A63. “However, we appreciate there have been delays this morning and are sorry for any inconvenience caused as a result. We don’t anticipate any significant ongoing delays as people become familiar with the new lanes, however we advise drivers planning to travel into Hull to allow additional time for their journeys this week as drivers adjust to the new road layout.” Share 10:48 Sofie Jackson The traffic situation at 9am this morning Share 10:47 Sofie Jackson Creation of split-level junction has progressed It appears the new layout is to do with the creation of the split-level junction. National Highways said it has made progress in essential works on Castle Street and the new junction at Mytongate. Explaining the changes in a previous statement, it said: “The new underpass marks a key part of the National Highways-led Castle Street scheme to improve journeys in Hull. “A new split-level junction, a critical part of the upgrade, is being created by lowering the level of the A63 to create an underpass, with Ferensway and Commercial Road crossing the A63. ” Share 10:39 Sofie Jackson New traffic sign shows where it splits on the approach into Hull Traffic appears to be split on the approach into Hull (Image: Jack Bowman/Hull Live) Share
