Major East Yorkshire road bridge to close for up to…

A historic road bridge in East Yorkshire will close for up ten weeks as essential repairs take place. East Riding Council is investing £350,000 to repair and improve road safety on the grade two-listed Stamford Bridge. The bridge, which carries the A166 over the River Derwent and gets busy with traffic from Driffield to York, has suffered years of damage. The council said the works, due to begin in mid-May, will strengthen the 80m-long village bridge, built in 1727. It has been struck in traffic accidents over the past few years, causing severe damage to its parapets. Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “The bridge badly needs repairing as it’s fallen victim to a number of road accidents in recent years.
