Tens of thousands of motorists have been caught speeding on a short stretch of a busy “smart” motorway in Yorkshire. A single camera captured 22,546 drivers breaking the 60mph speed limit on the 2.6-mile section of the M1, between junctions 33-34 near Sheffield, in just four years, the Telegraph reports . The smart motorway has varying speed limits, which are conveyed to drivers from overhead gantries. National Highways, which manages the motorway network, dropped the speed limit between J33-34 from 70mph to 60mph in 2020. It was said to be part of a trial to improve air quality.
